The Working English Springer Spaniel
Article by Gordon Harris as published in the NZ Dominion Gun Dog Trial Association 50th Jubilee 1936-1986, Booklet
From the earliest times spaniels were split into two categories-
(a) Setting
(b) Springing
The springers were required to spring game so that they could be caught in nets. They were not used as shooting dogs till a later part of their history.
The spaniel is first seen in history at about the 10th century, as a game finding dog for flushing game into nets.
There were always numbers of larger, longer legged, springing spaniels which, whether bred for size alone or not, became known as springers.
They were particularly popular in East Anglia, where a black or liver and white springing spaniel, bred originally by the Duke of Norfolk, gave rise to the Norfolk spaniel a breed that has disappeared into the ranks of the ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL. The Boughey Family of Aqualate in Shropshire were breeding a pure line of working English Springer since 1812. The first springer trials were held in the UK in 1905.
Our springer spaniels today, as one handler put it-combine ideally, the qualities of the Spanish fighting bull and the Zulu warrior. He should have blind courage and fury in his search, flush and pursuit of wounded game, with the unquestioning obedience for his handler that the Zulu had for his King. In a nutshell, a Working ESS should have: pace, style, endurance, keep his nose down to hunt whilst its tail moving in conjunction with its hindquarters, have boldness in its flushing, a good sense of orientation, a willingness to hunt within shotgun range, eyesight and memory to follow a flight and mark a fall and to locate the trail of wounded game. They must be willing to negotiate any cover or body of water, be steady after the flush and to shot, have a good pickup, soft mouth and good delivery to the hunter's hand.
It is equally important that the handler be a master of directional signals with respect to the dog retrieving unsighted shot game and that the dog be able to recognise exactly what his handler requires him to do, thus ensuring an enjoyable time for dog and handler.

The English Springer Spaniel in New Zealand
Under construction
“The English Springer Spaniel is arguably at its strongest point in New Zealand gundog trialling, thanks to the influx of top tier UK working genetics through imported dogs and semen. The real challenge now lies in how effectively these bloodlines are combined and developed to produce truly exceptional trial dogs.”
This article traces the development of the English Springer Spaniel gundog trialing from its inception in 1941(NZ Spaniel Trophy records) through to the contemporary era of 2025. While acknowledging the full historical arc, particular emphasis is placed on the post 1990 period, when Spaniel Natural Game (SNG) Trialing has redefined the sport and catalysed a new era of breeding and competition. A key element here is the influence of the leading kennels and bloodlines whose contributions have shaped the competitive Springer Spaniels seen in today’s SNG trials—dogs that reflect the accumulated legacy of generations of dedicated breeders, handlers, and trialling enthusiasts
The History of the Working English Springer Spaniel in New Zealand (Up to1960)
Spaniels were first introduced to New Zealand in the early 19th century (the 1800s) by European settlers. They arrived as multipurpose working companions during a period when settlers were introducing non-native game for food and sport.
Unlike the highly specialised Field Trial Champions of today, the first spaniels in New Zealand were functional generalists. They were primarily used to:Flush and Spring: Flushing game like rabbits and introduced birds (quail, pheasant) out of dense cover.Retrieve: Recovering game from land and water.Companionship: Serving as pets for settlers in isolated rural areas.
The transition from early generalist spaniels to "specialist" pedigrees in New Zealand occurred as breeders began importing specific lines known for their work in the UK. Because the New Zealand Kennel Club (now Dogs NZ) was established in 1886, the late 19th century marks the first time these specific lineages were formally tracked.
Post-1902: Following the official recognition of the English Springer Spaniel as a distinct breed in England (1902), specialised Springer lines began to appear more frequently in New Zealand.
1934: The Auckland Spaniel Club was established, marking a peak in the formalisation of spaniel breeding in the country.
The early development of the working English Springer Spaniel in New Zealand is closely tied to the formalisation of gundog trialing (dogs names present on the NI, SI and NZ Spaniel Cups can be dated back to 1941).
Many of these English Springer Spaniels in New Zealand carried no formal titles, even though they played an important role in shaping the breed.
Between the 1940s and the early 1960s, the DogsNZ (formerly NZ Kennel Club) archives provide only limited information, typically no more than basic registration entries.
The History of the Working English Springer Spaniel in New Zealand (1960-2025)
The development of the working English Springer Spaniel in New Zealand spans more than sixty years.
Across this period, the breed evolved through three major phases:
1. 1960s–1980s: Early NZ breeders and the first recorded UK imports.2. 1980s–1990s: NZ developed working lines and early SNG trial dogs.3. 1990s–2025: Imported UK studs, Australian influence, and modern semen imports.
This history documents the kennels, dogs, and imported bloodlines that shaped the NZ working Springer and the rise of Spaniel Natural Game Trials.
Early NZ Working Lines (1960s–early 1970s)
Before Spaniel Natural Game Trials or modern imports, NZ had a small but active base of working type Springers.
These were practical hunting dogs bred for NZ hunting conditions.
The following kennels represented winning trial dogs of the day.Grassmere (early 1960s)One of the earliest consistent sources of working Springers.Dalkey (early 1960s)Another early hunting type line.Mangatoki (1960s)A key early NZ line that later fed into Revyl Millvale (1960s)Produced early working Springers; later merged into Gunstar.Gunstar (Grassmere × Millvale)A combined early NZ line. These lines formed the pre import NZ gene pool.
First UK Imports (Early Seventies)The early seventies markthe first major arrival of UK working Springers into NZ.• Dalhousie Dan (Imp GBR)• Winterhill Dominoe (Imp GBR)• Saighton Silko (Imp GBR)• Brickclose Mayfly (Imp GBR)• Irbymarsh Mink (Imp GBR)
These imports introduced structured UK working genetics into NZ for the first time.
Wickcliffe Kennels was one of New Zealand’s early, influential working‑type English Springer Spaniel kennels, established by J. Parker.
Its foundation rested on utilising key UK imports:
BRACKENFIELD MUFFIN (IMP GBR)
BRICKSCLOSE MAYFLY (IMP GBR)SAIGHTON'S SILKO (IMP GBR) STAXIGOE SKIM (IMP GBR)
These dogs provided the structural backbone for the kennel’s breeding programme and introduced strong British working blood into New Zealand at a time when such lines were scarce.Wickcliffe blood later became a critical component in several emerging NZ families.
The kennel’s influence extended through:Sirah‑Selah Kennels, which built heavily on Wickcliffe lines and later strengthened them with FTCh Bellever Raffleson (Imp GBR)Early Springlea pedigreesRevyl, Ripia, and Duke of Granger lines, all of which carry Wickcliffe ancestryAlthough Wickcliffe itself was not a large‑scale operation, its early import decisions had an outsised impact on the direction of New Zealand’s working Springer population. The kennel served as a bridge between early NZ working types and the later influx of UK field‑trial blood, helping establish the genetic foundation that modern NZ trial dogs continue to draw from.
GFTCH Mangatoki Speed
GFTCH Mangatoki Speed (whelped 02/02/1965) remains a landmark in NZ gundog history as the only dog from that specific foundation group to achieve the Grand Field Trial Champion (GFTCH) title. His success marked a turning point:Proof of Concept: He proved that the local "rough shooting" lines (derived from Milvale and Grassmere) possessed the drive and intelligence required for high-level Gundog Trials. The Transition Era: His career coincided with the 1960s shift where trialing began to move away from generalist "any variety" stakes toward more specialised spaniel work.
NZ Developed Working Lines (Late 1970s–1980s)
Revyl
Built on Winterhill, Dalhousie, Mangatoki, and Wickcliffe. One of the strongest NZ developed lines of the era.
Sirah Selah
Built on Wickcliffe blood and strengthened by FTCh Bellever Raffleson (Imp GBR) via Rachel Greaves (Wrangham Kennels Australia).
Ripia
A foundation Revyl bitch strengthened by Driftalong Viking and NZ FTCH & FW Kenate Astra both GBR imports.
The Evolution of Spaniel Natural Game Trialing (1990s–2025)
Over three decades, Natural Game Trials evolved from:
• small, informal gatherings into• a structured, competitive national sport
Key developments included:
• standardised rules• recognised titles (FCh, GFCh, NTL) • consistent judging criteria• improved dog quality• increased breeder participation• the rise of specialist trial kennels• the emergence of modern kennels like Wyebrook, Claisfearann and Bullock Creek
By 2025, NZ had a strong, sustainable working Springer population aligned with modern UK field trial standards while retaining the toughness and practicality needed for NZ game.
The Kennels that have shaped the NZ Spaniel Natural Game, English Springer Spaniels
Wrangham Kennels (Rachel Greaves, Australia) - Late eighties to early 2000's
Wrangham Kennels in Australia, through the breeding of Rachel Greaves, provided several of the most influential early imports into New Zealand, acting as a crucial bridge between UK working bloodlines and the emerging modern NZ Springer Spaniel population.
Wrangham influence became deeply embedded in several key NZ Kennels breeding programmes.
NZ Dogs records show 20 Wrangham ESS imported into NZ between 1983 and 2006.
The most notable import being:
GFTCH & FCH Wrangham Bobby Dazzler (IMP AUS)
Ballyblack Kennels— Mid 1990s to Mid 2000s
Ballyblack was a key New Zealand working Springer kennel active from the mid 1990s through to the mid 2000s, a period that aligns directly with the establishment and early growth of Spaniel Natural Game Trials. Their dogs were known for stylish, forward hunting, natural quartering, strong gamefinding, and a reliable, biddable trial temperament. These qualities made Ballyblack one of the kennels most widely used in the early trial fields, helping define the standard for the sport as it was forming. The Ballyblack line was built through select matings from the best working dogs of the era, drawing on several influential imported sires and kennels:Key Influences Behind Ballyblack• Seadrift Kennels (NZ)o Sandy of Gwibernant (Imp GBR)o Gwibernant Gyser (Imp GBR) These brought classic Welsh working blood with strong natural gamefinding.• Jagpacours (NZ)o FTCh Knockmany Bracken (Imp GBR) — one of the most influential early imported sires in NZo Maesydderwen Mink (Imp GBR) — modern UK trial style, adding pace and pattern• Sirah Selah (NZ)o FTCh Bellever Raffleson (Imp GBR) — added steadiness and traditional British working type• Wrangham (AU)o Provided early working stock used across several NZ kennels• Wickcliffe (NZ)o One of the earliest NZ kennels to use structured UK working blood
Modern NZ ESS Kennels (2000–2025)
Keepersmoor (NZ)
Keepersmoor began as a small New Zealand working‑spaniel kennel in the early 2000s, operating alongside their more visible Labrador breeding. The spaniel side of the kennel was built on UK working imports, particularly dogs carrying Teazel Bank and Keepersmoor (UK) blood.
Peak Influence: GFCh Keepersmoor Sage Wood (2007)The standout product of the kennel was:
GFCh Keepersmoor Sage Wood
Bred by KeepersmoorSired by Brick of BallyblackDam: Keepersmoor TangelHandled by Jamie PaytonBecame one of the most influential NZ‑bred working Springers of the 2010sSage Wood’s combination of UK working imports + early NZ working lines made him a genetic bridge between eras.
His offspring entered several major kennels and helped shape the modern NZ working ESS population.
Decline and Legacy
Keepersmoor’s spaniel breeding tapered off in the 2010s as the kennel focused more on Labradors. However, their influence persists through:Claisfearann (major)Ballyblack (shared ancestry)Strathmore, Springlea, Peplow (indirect)Independent hunters’ linesToday, Keepersmoor blood is a quiet but stabilising presence in NZ working ESS pedigrees
Strathmore (NZ)
Strathmore Kennels became a notable contributor to New Zealand’s working English Springer Spaniel landscape during the rise of modern field‑trial breeding. Drawing on a blend of established NZ working families and later UK‑influenced lines, Strathmore produced dogs known for reliability, natural game‑finding, and steady, biddable temperaments. Their bloodlines appear behind several successful trial dogs and kennels, including Heartland, Peplow, Claisfearann, and Keepersmoor, helping shape the type and working style seen in NZ trials through the post 2010.
MORE TO COME
Wyrebrook (NZ)
Spaniels were first introduced to New Zealand in the early 19th century (the 1800s) by European settlers. They arrived as multipurpose working companions during a period when settlers were introducing non-native game for food and sport. Unlike the highly specialised Field Trial Champions of today, the first spaniels in New Zealand were functional generalists. It sits between the early NZ developed lines and the modern UK/Australian influenced era.Wyebrook was built on imported UK working blood, most notably:• FCh Briarwood Bradie (Imp GBR) — UK working bitch• FCh Wyrebrook Puriri Peddler — NZ bred with imported ancestryWyebrook dogs have been used by hunters and triallists for nearly two decades and continue to contribute to the NZ working Springer population today.
Peplow (NZ)
Peplow Kennels was established on a strong foundation of Ian Openshaw’s Rytex working lines, brought into New Zealand through three influential imports:
Rytex Ralmo
Rytex Rilmoes
Rytex Renky
This strategic use of proven UK field‑trial blood produced some of the most successful NZ trial dogs of their era, including:
GFCh & GFTCh Springlea Earl of Heartland
GFCh Peplow Massey Knight
GFCh Peplow Sonny
The kennel became synonymous with consistent, high‑quality working ability, and dogs carrying the Peplow prefix—or Peplow blood in their pedigree—are widely regarded as reliable, capable working Springer Spaniels.
The Modern Era — Claisfearann Leads the Way
Claisfearann (NZ)
Claisfearann is one of New Zealand’s most influential modern working English Springer Spaniel kennels, founded and developed by Martin Hawthorne.
Built on a combination of elite UK working blood and carefully selected NZ and Australian lines, Claisfearann has produced more Field Champions than any other NZ kennel of the
2010–2025 era.Claisfearann dogs dominate both Natural Game Trials and real‑world hunting across New Zealand.
